BMW Recall Information
  Last Updated  June, 2009

APRIL 2009 -- BMW is recalling 12 MY 2009 mini cooper convertible vehicles. These vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 110, "Tire Selection and Rims." The issue involves the vehicle tires and tire pressure label. The affected vehicles were equipped with 15-inch wheels instead of 16-inch wheels, therefore, the tire label does not correspond to the tires on the vehicle as required by FMVSS 110. Failure to follow proper vehicle loading specifications or misprint label could increase the risk of a crash. Dealers will replace the tires with 16-inch wheels free of charge. The recall is expected to begin during May 2009.  Owners may contact BMW at 1-866-646-4772.   09V-143

MARCH 2009 -- BMW is recalling MY 2009 F800 GS vehicles. The axle shaft wall thickness may not have been manufactured according to specifications. If the wall thickness was not sufficient, the axle shaft could deform and could break increasing the risk of a crash. Dealers will inspect the axle shaft assembly andreplace or repair the necessary components free of charge. The manufacturer has not yet provided an owner notification schedule. Owners may contact BMW at 1-800-831-1117.  09V-088

DECEMBER 2008 -- BMW is recalling 28,450 MY 2007 and 2008 Mini Cooper S vehicles. The centrally located tailpipe extension protrudes slightly beyond the rear bumper and inadvertent contact may occur with a person's leg. If the tailpipe is hot when contact occurs, the person's leg can be burned. Dealers will replace the tailpipe extension with a new shorter tailpipe free of charge. The recall is expected to begin in January 2009. . This recall was the subject of an Engineering Analysis, EA08-020, conducted by the Office of Defects Investigation. 08V-657

NOVEMBER 2008 -- BMW is recalling 2,500 MY 2008-2009 M3 passenger vehicles with an optional double clutch transmission. The problem involves the double clutch gearbox. In a situation of rapid vehicle deceleration, the transmission software may perform a multistage downshift. In that situation, at low vehicle speeds, it is possible for the engine to stall increasing the risk of a crash. Dealers will reprogram the engine and transmission electronic control unit with updated software free of charge. The recall is expected to begin during December 2008.  08V595

MAY 2008 -- BMW is recalling 55 MY 2008 X5 sports utility vehicles for problems with the rear axle stabilizer (anti-sway bar). These vehicles were equipped with a sports-suspension stabilizer rather than a standard suspension stabilizer on the rear axle. In certain driving conditions, such as fast lane changes at high speed, the vehicle could experience an 'over-steer' behavior affecting vehicle handling and control, which could increase the risk of a crash. Dealers will replace the rear axle stabilizer. The recall is expected to begin during May 2008. Owners may contact BMW at 1-800-831-1117 or via e-mail to CustomerRelations@bmwusa.com. 08V-170

AUGUST 2008 -- BMW is recalling 200,000 MY 2006 3 Series (sport seat), MY 2004-2006 5 Series (standard and sport seat), and MY 2004-2006 X3 passenger vehicles. A fatigue failure of the front passenger seat occupant detection mat can occur. If this happens, the front passenger air bags, with the exception of the head protection system, will be deactivated and the air bag warning lamp as well as the passenger air bag "on-off" lamp will be illuminated. In this situation the front passenger air bags will not deploy even if a sufficiently severe accident would occur and occupant protection provided by the system would not be possible. Dealers will rework the front passenger seat sensor mat so that external force application to the seat does not cause a crack to the mat. The recall is expected to begin during late September 2008. BMW will also extend the warranty on these vehicles to 10 years from first registration without any mileage limit. Owners may contact BMW at 1-800-525-7417. BMW is extending the warranty to 10 years from first registration without any mileage limit to the following vehicles: MY 2006 6-Series, 3-Series (standard seat), MY 2004-2005 Z4, MY 2004-2006 7-Series, MY 2006 X5, and MY 2004-2006 5-Series (comfort seat). Under the extended warranty program, the occupant detection mat in a vehicle that experiences this specific issue will be replaced at no charge to the customer. This recall was the subject of an Engineering Analysis, EA08-001, conducted by the Office of Defects Investigation. 08V384

NOVEMBER 2007 -- BMW is recalling 320 MY 2007 Mini Cooper and Cooper S convertible vehicles for failing to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 110, "Tire Selection and Rims." The standard requires that the tire size and corresponding tire pressure be indicated on the label and the label does not correspond to the actual tires mounted on the vehicle. Tire pressure that is too high can cause premature wear and tire damage which could lead to unfavorable driving conditions increasing the risk of a crash. Owners will be provided with new tire information placards and installation instructions. At the customer's option, a dealer can install the label for them. The recall is expected to begin during December 2007. 07V-533

OCTOBER 2007 -- BMW is recalling 29,250 MY 2006-2007 550I, 650I coupe and convertible and MY 2007 X5 4.8I passenger vehicles equipped with V8 engines. In conditions of below freezing temperatures combined with low humidity, it is possible for electrostatic discharge to occur at the fuel rails. If this were to occur, the engine electronic control unit (ECU) could be affected resulting in engine stalling. If stalling were to occur, the driver may not be able to maintain vehicle speed or accelerate and the power steering could fail increasing the risk of a crash. Dealers will attach two ground cables in the engine compartment. The recall is expected to begin during November 2007. 07V-479

BMW is recalling 6,595 MY 2007 X5 passenger vehicles for failing to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 135, "Passenger Car Brake Systems." The cap of the brake fluid reservoir has been designed in order to recognize a low fluid level of the hydraulic brake system by triggering a red warning lamp in the instrument cluster. A switch that is attached to this cap could malfunction at high temperatures. If this happened, the red warning lamp in the instrument cluster would not be activated. Failure of the hydraulic brake system may cause increased stopping distances which could result in a crash. Dealers will replace the cap of the brake fluid reservoir. The manufacturer has not yet provided an owner notification schedule. 07V-391

NEWS:    BMW Recalls 200,000 Vehicles for Airbag Failures

Extends airbag warranty for some models

ConsumerAffairs.com -- August 13, 2008 -- BMW is recalling 200,000 cars and small SUVs because the front passenger-side airbag could fail.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) warned that in some of the recalled BMWs it is possible that "the front passenger airbags will not deploy even if a sufficiently severe accident would occur."

The recalled BMWs include the 2004 to 2005 5-Series standard and sport seat models, the 2004 to 2006 X3 and the 2006 3-Series with sport seats.

NHTSA reported on its Web site that the passenger-side airbags can deactivate because of wear associated with a passenger getting in and out of the vehicle.

"Depending on the manner and frequency of the front passenger's entry and exit, small cracks have developed in the (sensor) mat. If this occurs, the front passenger airbags, with the exception of the head protection system, will be deactivated," the agency warned.

BMW dealers will repair the sensor system in the passenger seat when the recall begins in late September. BMW will extend the warranty for airbags on the recalled vehicles "to 10 years from the first registration without any mileage limit," according to NHTSA.

The warranty extension covers the 2006 6-Series, 3-Series with a standard seat, 2004 to 2005 Z4, 2004 to 2006 7-Series, 2006 X5 and 2004 to 2006 5-Series with a comfort seat.

"Under the extended warranty program, the occupant detection mat in a vehicle that experiences this specific issue will be replaced at not charge to the customer," NHTSA advises on its Web site.

NHTSA began investigating airbags failures in the BMW earlier this year when the Office of Defect Investigation reported that "the passenger frontal airbag may malfunction and render the passenger airbag inoperative."

The models included in the initial investigation were the 2004 to 2006 BMW 5 and 7 series sedans, Z4 convertibles and X3 SUVs, as well as 2006 BMW 3 and 6 series cars and X5 SUVs.

NHTSA reported "729 non-duplicating owner reports and 23,739 non-duplicating warranty claims" prompted the investigation or engineering analysis.

BMW owners can contact the automaker at 1-800-525-7417 or NHTSA at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153).
